Luk Chai is the first Asian elephant calf to be born in Australia. He was born after a gestation period of 660 days to Thong Dee who was a former street elephant from Bangkok.
At birth he weighed 96kg’s and will one day weigh in excess of 5000kg’s as he matures into an adult bull.
Just like his father, Luk Chai is full of personality. He is strong, confident and a very active calf who loves exploring and is especially fond of swimming.
His arrival heralds a significant step forward in our regional Zoo’s efforts to conserve the Asian Elephant as the species is endangered in the wild.
Young calves like Luk Chai will ensure a future for elephants in Australia for generations to come, help to create awareness on issues threatening wild elephants and play a part in raising support and funding for conservation programs throughout Asia.
