Pan troglodytes
Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives. Like us, they communicate through gestures and facial expressions. They are intelligent animals that use tools to obtain food and teamwork tactics to hunt prey. Led by a dominant male, family groups travel during the day and build nests to sleep in at night.
Taronga has eighteen Chimpanzees. At 56, Lulu is one of our oldest females, having a very influential role in the group. She has had a number of offspring over two generations. Some of her offspring have even joined other groups overseas.
