What days are available to do the Keeper for a Day?

Keeper for a Day is currently available on Wednesday only.

Note: Please ensure you have booked your program well in advance of the expiry date to secure an available place.

What animals will I get to work with?

You should expect to be working with a variety of zoo animals. Animal welfare, health issues, or a change to the zoo's collection may alter the program but Taronga will ensure that all of the day’s activities will create lasting memories.

Do I get to go in with the animals?

You will have access to some zoo animals where appropriate. You will get a behind-the-scenes experience with the animals that you don’t get direct contact with.

What sort of activities will I be expected to do?

Keeper for a Day participants will help to clean out enclosures, prepare food, create enrichment activities, and feed and meet some of our animals.

Do I need to be fit to do the tasks?

Some of the work is quite physical (and getting around the Taronga Zoo site can be quite tiring too). However, a reasonable level of fitness should get you through.

If you do not wish to do a task, you will be excused.

What happens if I am feeling a bit unwell on the day?

Participants suffering from cold or flu will be restricted in access to some zoo animals. Participants must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in any way.

How long does the day last?

The full day session will last approximately 7.5 hours, depending on the day’s activities. There will be a break for a yummy lunch and less strenuous activities in the afternoon.

How many people will be taking part at the same time as me?

A maximum of five people are able to take part in the experience. Only paying participants are able to complete the experience. Please note that the zoo does not open for general visitors until 9.00am.

Will there be someone qualified with me?

A qualified Keeper will be with you at all times to explain and supervise the activities.

Working with any animal always carries a degree of risk, but you will be fully briefed on what you should and should not do in any situation and you will be fully supervised at all times. Taronga will take all necessary precautions and where participants follow instructions by the qualified keeper, there will not be any danger in the activities.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Taronga’s Keepers work in all weather conditions. It is advised to dress and take appropriate precautions for all weather conditions. In extreme conditions, the program may be cancelled, or the itinerary altered.

What should I wear?

Keeper for a Day participants should wear:

• Comfortable, work clothes suitable for wearing outdoors in dirty conditions

• Flat, closed shoes (preferably boots)

• Rain jacket, sun hat and sunscreen as required

Are refreshments included?

Keeper for a Day includes a complimentary lunch plus refreshments.

What's included in the price?

‘Keeper for a Day’ activities and complimentary lunch and refreshments. Entry to the zoo is also included so you are free to have a look around afterwards. Please note that this is not always possible, as the experience may finish close to the zoo closing time.

All funds raised through Taronga’s activities and experiences contribute to Taronga’s operations and conservation endeavours.

Will I be able to take photographs?

A photographer will be on hand for a part of the day to take photos. We recommend that you also bring your own camera to capture some memories of your day.

(Note: Photography is not possible in some back of house areas).
