Australian Marine Mammals Research Centre

At AMMRC we aim to promote the conservation of marine mammals and their environment by:

  • increasing biological knowledge,
  • monitoring selected marine mammal populations, and
  • increasing public awareness by positive, conservation-based education programmes.

AMMRC was established in 1996 as a co-operative centre of the University of Sydney and the Zoological Parks Board of New South Wales.

Our group of researchers, behavioural ecologists and veterinarians, have experience working with:

  • Seals of the Antarctic pack ice,
  • Seal and cetacean populations in Australian waters, and
  • Comparing southern and northern hemisphere endangered populations of cetaceans.
