Chrysocyon brachyurus

Fine-boned features of the Maned Wolf atest to it being more closely related to the fox than to the wolf. Like a fox, it preys on small rodents and birds as well as fruit and vegetation. The 'mane' refers to the thick band of red fur around the neck and behind the head.

Solitary and secretive, Maned Wolves inhabit grasslands close to forests in central and eastern South America. Their elegant long legs are well adpated for travelling long distances through grassy habitats. Western Plains Zoo's first Maned Wolves arrived in 1984 and have successfully raised 16 offspring.
