Christmas comes early for the Otters at the Zoo

Keepers at Taronga Western Plains Zoo have been busy spreading some early Christmas cheer amongst the animals.

Today, the Oriental Small-clawed Otters will be treated to a papier-mâché turkey which will be stuffed and smeared with their favourite fishy treats.

These Christmas enrichment items have been made by a dedicated Zoo volunteer to ensure the animals get to share in the spirit of Christmas.

Keepers often provide enrichment items to the animals at the Zoo, this may include hiding food around the exhibits, changing feed times, providing toys or new ‘furniture’ for climbing and playing on, as well as placing food inside objects that challenge the animals both mentally and physically. This is all designed to keep the animals’ active and healthy.

“We regularly provide enrichment items for the animals, as it encourages natural behaviours such as foraging or problem solving,” said keeper Linda Matthews. 

“It is only fitting that at this time of year the enrichment has a Christmas theme and the animals get to share in the festive season,” said Linda.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is open every day across the Christmas and New Year period including Christmas Day.

“Summer is a great time to visit the Zoo, we have lots of new arrivals including the Hippo calf, Giraffe calves, Przewalski’s Horse foal and Addax calves,” said Linda.
