Taronga’s ungulate keepers have recently implemented a new enrichment schedule to challenge our clever giraffes.
Enrichment is an integral part of our work at Taronga, as keepers are always looking for new ways to physically and mentally stimulate their animals as they would do for themselves in the wild.
Enrichment comes in many different forms and can be as simple as removing something from the environment that would normally be there or as complex as a puzzle feeder.
Some of the new giraffe enrichment items are old favourites and some are completely new – like this cupboard feeder in our picture.
Our giraffes were eager to explore the new feeder, using their dextrous tongues to retrieve the tasty treats hidden inside.
