Male lion cub has been named!
Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s first ever litter of lion cubs have been a favourite for visitors since they went on display in May. The three lion cubs, one male and two females, were born on the 28 February 2015 to first time mother Maya and experienced father Lazarus.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s first ever litter of lion cubs have been a favourite for visitors since they went on display in May. The three lion cubs, one male and two females, were born on the 28 February 2015 to first time mother Maya and experienced father Lazarus.
A facebook competition was launched to name the male cub, with hundreds of suggestions coming in. The winning suggestion selected by keepers was BAAKO (pronounced baa-koe), meaning first born.
According to Keeper, Roger Brogan, Baako and his sisters, Makeba, meaning greatness and Zuri, meaning beautiful have been busy exploring their surroundings, climbing over rocks and logs and rumbling with each other.
“They are a bit mischievous and are certainly keeping first-time mother, Maya, on her toes,” Roger said.
Keepers have been impressed by Maya’s nurturing of the cubs. “Maya is a great mother, she is very attentive,” Roger said.
“When the cubs are playing Baako will tend to go one way and the girls will go the other, and you can see Maya keeping a close eye on them all.”
Visitors to the zoo will see the cubs on display with mum Maya and Dad Lazarus from 9am daily.
