Zoo keepers and veterinarians are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Imerina, the baby Ring-tailed Lemur late yesterday.

Keepers noticed Imerina was quiet and lethargic when they were doing their last rounds for the day. This was unusual as earlier in the afternoon she was her very active self. Keepers immediately called veterinary staff and stayed with Imerina until they arrived, but sadly she passed away.

Further investigation has revealed Imerina had a congenital birth defect that inevitably affected her breathing. She had coped so well, had good body condition and growth rate, that there were no visible signs there was anything wrong until she suddenly became unwell.

Keepers who worked with Imerina say she was a very cheeky character. She will be greatly missed.
