The Year of the Tiger

The Year of the Tiger

For those of us who celebrated Lunar New Year in February, this year is the year of the majestic Tiger – one of our favourite animals here at Taronga! Sadly, there are estimated to be fewer than 400 Sumatran Tigers remaining in the wild. This is an extremely heartbreaking figure.

Habitat loss is one of the key threats impacting Sumatran Tigers.

Rainforests around the world have experienced devastating losses, being cleared to make way for ever-expanding unsustainable oil palm plantations. These plantations are the leading cause of habitat destruction for the Sumatran Tiger and many other native species.

Supporting Tiger Habitat

Palm oil is found in roughly half the packaged products sold in supermarkets including favourite snack foods like ice cream, cookies, crackers, cereals, doughnuts, potato chips and of course chocolate! With Easter coming up, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your choices and choose brands that use 100% sustainable palm oil.

Thanks to the support of our amazing community of Wildlife Defenders, Taronga is also working with our partners in Sumatra to plant trees and restore vital tiger habitat in Way Kambas National Park.

The park is home to more than 45 species of wildlife, who have returned to the area thanks to you.
