Workshop overview
Taronga’s local and international conservation programs provide an ideal case study for the Stage 5 Environmental Change and Management unit. In this workshop, students examine the causes and consequences of human‑induced environmental change, focusing on ecosystems in Australia and Sumatra that are under increasing pressure from habitat loss, deforestation and unsustainable land use.
Learners explore how different worldviews influence approaches to environmental management and discuss why sustainability requires ecological, cultural and economic considerations. Through guided activities, students investigate the value of biologically rich landscapes and analyse how environmental change threatens ecosystems and species survival.
By evaluating real‑world responses to deforestation in both Australia and Sumatra, students not only compare management strategies and assess their effectiveness but also propose individual and collective actions that have the power to contribute to sustainable outcomes.
