Beginners Focus: Capturing Wildlife Through Your Lens

Learn how to capture stunning wildlife images in one of Australia’s most unique and scenic locations, Taronga Zoo Sydney. This beginner friendly course covers essential photography fundamentals including technique, composition, exposure, lighting, depth of field and shutter speed, with tips on getting the most out of your images in post production. You’ll also enjoy exclusive behind the scenes access to photograph Taronga’s animals in action, making it perfect for beginners looking to build confidence and creativity behind the camera.

Meet the trainers

Alison Lee Rubie

Alison Lee Rubie is an Australian wildlife photographer passionate about storytelling through imagery. Her career began with a life changing trip to South Africa in 2013 and has since taken her across Africa photographing hundreds of species, including critically endangered wildlife. Alison now leads photographic safaris in destinations such as Botswana and Uganda, and her work has been recognised nationally, including finalist placements in the Crikey! Magazine cover competition, Australian Photographer of the Year, and the Mosman Photography Awards

Scott Brown

Scott Brown is a wildlife photographer with a lifelong passion for nature, inspired by his grandfather, a renowned contemporary and landscape photographer. His career has taken him to wildlife hotspots across Africa, South East Asia and Central America. Scott now works with Taronga Zoo’s media team, creating content for social media, signage and visitor maps, with his work featured in major publications including The Daily Telegraph and The Herald Sun. He is also a Primate Keeper at Taronga Zoo and a Trainer at the Taronga Training Institute, while completing a Diploma of Photography.

Prepare for your course

  • Participants must complete an online module prior to the workshop at Taronga Zoo.
  • Participants must have their own digital SLR or mirrorless camera to bring to the workshop day.
  • Each course will access the Zoo by foot therefore requires participants to have a moderate level of fitness and good mobility.  
  • Day courses are an all-weather experience so please come prepared for any inclement weather. Taronga reserves the right to cancel the course at any time due to unforeseen circumstances such as natural disasters or in the event of severe weather. In the unlikely chance that this situation should occur, Taronga will contact you prior to your participation date.
