Workshop overview

In this energetic, hands‑on workshop, students become real “data detectives” as they explore how living things change over time. Working with a range of invertebrates, students observe and identify key features, then group animals based on their similarities and differences.

A highlight of the session is the tree shake activity, where students collect real data on local invertebrates living in Taronga’s Backyard to Bush gardens. Students work in teams to gather specimens, record their findings and use the results to create engaging data displays. From shaking trees to sorting bugs, this workshop turns scientific inquiry into an exciting outdoor adventure!

Outcomes

Content

Science and Technology

  • ST1-DAT-01: collects, represents and uses data to identify patterns and relationships.

Investigations of changes provide knowledge and understanding

  • Collect data about the variety of living things in a local habitat, group them and justify the grouping.

Mathematics

  • MA1-DATA-01: gathers and organises data, displays data in lists, tables and picture graphs.

Asks questions and gather data

  • Gather data and track what has been counted by using concrete materials, tally marks, lists or symbols.

Represent data with objects and drawings and describe the displays

  • Use concrete materials or pictures of objects as symbols to create data displays where one object or picture represents one data value.
