Workshop overview

Modern zoos are centres for conservation, education and research, working to protect wildlife both onsite and in the wild. In this fascinating workshop, students step into the role of an exhibit designer to explore how zoo habitats are created to meet the complex needs of animals while supporting learning, welfare and sustainability.
 
Students investigate how exhibit design allows animals to express natural behaviours and adaptations, and how factors such as enrichment, habitat complexity and species‑specific requirements influence design choices. They also consider the human side of exhibit design including visitor engagement and interpretation, keeper access and safety, operational functionality, budgeting and ethical, sustainable material choices.

  • Explore the design of a structure, product or place and identify how user needs are addressed

  • ST3-DDT-01-uses design processes to create, evaluate and modify designed solutions
  • Develop design ideas to build a prototype using design criteria
  • Test, evaluate and modify the prototype to meet the design criteria

Science S4, Technology 7-8

  • TE4-DES-01- communicates and evaluates design ideas and solutions
  • SC4-LIV-01 - describes the role, structure and function of a range of living systems and their components
  • Identify the characteristics and properties of components in engineered systems
  • Outline factors affecting the design of engineered systems
  • Document design and production processes when developing projects
    Science
  • Identify the components that make up an ecosystem.

Engineering Technology S5

  • EGT5-EVL-01 investigates and evaluates engineering systems and solutions
  • Describe the function and purpose of structures, including how they provide access and shelter
  • Outline regulations, codes of practice and standards for an identified structure in Australia
