Helping safeguard the future of the planet

The Wildlife Retreat at Taronga has been designed with environmental sustainability at the forefront, offering an eco-friendly, rewarding experience aligning with Taronga’s mission: to secure a shared future for wildlife and people.

In fitting with Taronga’s commitment to sustainability, the environmentally focused design seeks to minimize our impact through thoughtful and world leading design.

Eco-retreat

The Wildlife Retreat at Taronga has been designed to significantly reduce the building’s carbon footprint by taking on green initiatives.

  • Rooftop mounted solar photovoltaic systems that provide a local and clean source of electricity to power the Wildlife Retreat
  • Cross-laminated timber construction, offering a lower environmental footprint than concrete or steel and improved thermal performance to reduce heating and cooling needs
  • Recycled water for toilet flushing and irrigation from Taronga’s on-site water treatment plant
  • WELS water efficient fittings throughout the precinct to greatly reduce potable water consumption
  • LED lighting and energy efficient appliances, with ceiling fans and louvres that support natural cross-ventilation and reduce electricity use

These actions were put in place so that guests can enjoy a rewarding experience with a long-lasting and positive impact.

A sustainable framework

We apply a sustainable and ethical framework to all of our operational and purchasing decisions and we work with partners that share our passion to lead the way in environmental sustainability and climate change action.

Some of the actions we have taken are listed below:

Commitment to Country - embedding a way of working that respects and includes Indigenous peoples, cultures, knowledge and place. Where possible we select First Nations owned and operated businesses.

Thoughtfully selected amenities – Our bathroom amenities, tea, coffee and minibar items are chosen for comfort, with sustainability in mind:

Bamboo materials – reducing plastic use.
Glass over plastic – no plastic bottles.
Better plastics – plant-based bioplastic items.
Recyclable packaging – FSC paper and compostable.
Cleaner ingredients – no palm oil or parabens.
Lower footprint – prioritising Australian-made products.

eWater Systems – An Australian-owned biotech company supplying on-site generators that use electrolysis technology to create commercial-grade disinfectant and sanitiser, replacing harsh chemicals.

Sustainably sourced seafood – We prioritise MSC or ASC certified seafood, ensuring the food we serve is responsibly and environmentally sourced.
