Would you like to support pioneering research into the elusive and charismatic Platypus? Come and help with animal observation and behavioural data collection at Taronga Zoo!
This role will directly support our world leading Platypus Breeding and research programs and offers an opportunity for you to learn more about this captivating animal and the science behind our outstanding animal welfare standards!
The purpose of the role is to:
Taronga’s Australian Fauna Zookeeping and Conservation Science Teams are looking for volunteers to assist with animal observation, data collection and data entry. Successful applicants will receive basic training in animal observation and data collection.
Position details
- This role is available 7 days a week between 8/9am – 12/1pm (flexible 4-hour minimum shifts)
- Applicants must be available to volunteer one day per fortnight or one day per week
- Due to the level of training and investment in our volunteers, this position requires a 12-month commitment
- All Taronga Volunteers are required to complete eLearning and attend induction and basic animal observation training
- All Taronga Volunteers must acquire and maintain a valid Working with Children Check (FREE for volunteers) and complete a Working Directly with Animals Declaration form

To be successful in this role you will:
- Commitment, punctuality, reliability, and a professional, friendly manner
- Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a diverse team and capacity to read, understand and carefully follow directions and WHS protocols
- A good level of fitness and stamina and the ability to work the full shift, in all weather conditions on a steep site
- Ability to meet the selection criteria
- All Volunteers are required to acquire and maintain a valid Working with Children Check (FREE for volunteers) and complete a Working Directly with Animals Declaration Form.
Please note: This volunteer role will have no direct animal contact.

- Be able to maintain accuracy and motivation with repetitive tasks
- Good observation skills and attention to detail
- Capacity to read, understand and carefully follow directions
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish good working relationships
- Experience with Microsoft Office and ability to use Excel at a basic level

Cost
A Volunteer Programs Joining Fee of $120.00 will be charged to successful applicants**.
