From tiny wrens to towering cassowaries, join our Birds Team and get behind the scenes supporting the daily care of a diverse range of bird species.

Our amazing Birds Team are looking for Volunteer Zookeepers to support the care of some of Taronga's most fascinating feathered residents. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced and knowledgeable Zookeepers, learn about bird behaviour, care and husbandry, and contribute to animal welfare and conservation at Taronga Zoo.

The purpose of the role is to:

From preparing diets and maintaining habitats to observing animal behaviour, you'll play a hands-on role in supporting animal welfare, conservation and education outcomes. Working alongside Keepers, you'll help care for a wide variety of bird species, from tiny wrens through to cassowaries, while gaining insight into the day-to-day operations of one of Taronga's most dynamic animal divisions. No two days are quite the same, but every task contributes to providing outstanding care for the animals and supporting Taronga's conservation mission.

Position details

  • This role is available seven days a week from 6:40am to 3:00pm.
  • Applicants must be available to volunteer one regular shift per fortnight.
  • This is an active outdoor role involving walking, standing, lifting and cleaning tasks.
  • Due to the level of training and investment in our volunteers, this position requires a 12-month commitment.
  • All Taronga Volunteers are required to complete eLearning and attend induction and basic animal observation training.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Commitment, punctuality, reliability, and a professional, friendly manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a diverse team and capacity to read, understand and carefully follow directions and WHS protocols
  • A good level of fitness and stamina and the ability to work the full shift, in all weather conditions on a steep site
  • Ability to meet the selection criteria
  • All Volunteers are required to acquire and maintain a valid Working with Children Check (FREE for volunteers) and complete a Working Directly with Animals Declaration Form.

Cost

A Volunteer Programs fee of $120 will be charged to successful applicants.
