Workshop overview

This lesson explores the processes that drive adaptation and evolution through close observation of a diverse range of native and exotic species. Students will investigate how abiotic, biotic and human-induced selection pressures influence the development of structural, physiological and behavioural adaptations, including those of endotherms and ectotherms.

Students will participate in interactive learning experiences to examine evolutionary patterns, including divergent and convergent evolution, and the role of isolation and adaptation in the evolution of Australia's unique monotremes and marsupials. They will also explore how First Nations people have long applied detailed ecological knowledge of animal and plant adaptations for specific purposes.

By linking real-world animal observations with scientific evidence and data analysis, this lesson provides an engaging and authentic context for understanding adaptation, biodiversity and evolution, while reinforcing key concepts from the Stage 6 Biology syllabus.
