Workshop overview

Scientific inquiry relies on gathering evidence to form well‑reasoned conclusions about the world around us. In this workshop, students step into the role of a behavioural biologist, formally collecting data that would otherwise be overlooked as we go about our daily business.

During a lesson with Taronga Educators, students will be guided in collecting observational data to develop questions that enhance understanding of the living world. Students will be directed to collect data on non-exhibit animals in the zoo consider how similar studies can be run in their school playgrounds. exploring behaviour patterns and consider how environmental factors influence their observations.

Stage: Stage 4

Outcomes

Content

Data Science 1

  • SC4-DA1-01 Explains how data is used by scientists to model and predict scientific phenomena.

Collecting, using and analysing datasets

  • Formulate and investigate scientific questions that can be addressed with data
  • Conduct repeated experimental trials to calculate and compare the mean and range of data collected by different groups to discuss the accuracy and reliability of experimental data
  • Analyse data collected from a range of student investigations to look for patterns and test whether data is consistent with an initial prediction

Working Scientifically

  • SCLS-WS-01
uses senses and scientific tools to make observations
  • SCLS-WS-02
asks questions or makes predictions using observations
  • SCLS-WS-03
    participates in planning safe investigations
  • SCLS-WS-04
safely participates in an investigation by following a sequence

Observing

  • Use senses to make observations

Conducting investigations

  • Follow the planned procedure, including the measurement and control of variables.
  • Record observations and measurements accurately, using correct units for physical quantities.

Questioning and Prediciting

  • Ask questions about familiar objects and events based on observations
  • Make predictions based on observations

Planning investigations

  • Recognise which variables are to be changed, kept the same and measured in an investigation
  • Participate in making decisions about how to conduct an investigation
  • Follow a plan to participate in an investigation
Implement identified safe practices and follow safety rules
  • Participate in collecting data

Taronga Education is dedicated to providing inclusive and accessible learning experiences for all students. Our aim is to support every student’s participation and engagement in our workshops, and we would be happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments for your students.
