Satellite tracking of Sea Turtles

Satellite tracking will provide a better indication of release success, especially if the satellite tags remain functional for an extended period of time once the turtles are released to sea. Tracking can help indicate the level of impact of marine pollution/human interaction on turtles and provide critical information about habitat use.

Habitat usage can be defined by tracking released marine turtles and thus indicate potential sites of exposure to marine debris. Once habitat usage is established, ocean surveys of debris and pollution levels may be formulated based on the satellite tracking patterns. Because marine turtles can be successfully monitored, they are valuable indicators of the impact marine debris has on the environment.
